Plas Curig - Boutique Hostel
The former Capel Curig YHA hostel was bought by Amy McIntyre and her father in January 2001. It took seven months of refurbishment to transform it from a 1-star to a 5-star hostel before Plas Curig opened its doors to visitors once again. The project was definitely a family affair with Amy's mother, the designer Jane McIntyre, creating the interiors.
Plas Curig brings boutique style hostels to the outdoors. It sleeps 54 in doubles/twins, dorms and family rooms. None of the rooms are en-suite but there are private shower rooms with a shower, toilet and basin. It's a self-catering hostel with prices starting at £22.50/night for a cosy bunk bed - think hypoallergenic bedding, warm Welsh blanket and curtains for privacy - in a dorm or £25/person in a double/twin room.
A Guardian article
described it as: "An extremely good value boutique hotel. It is interior-designed, plush and thoughtful." Daniel Neilson, writing in the May issue of The Great Outdoors magazine likened the communal kitchen to the one on Masterchef.
Without doubt it is ideally situated for enjoying northern Snowdonia with fantastic views of the Snowdon horseshoe. Oh... and there's a pub next door that does great food - the Bryn Tyrch Inn! What more could you want?
