There's little doubt that the Snowdon Race
is one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the 'What's On' listings. Taking place on Saturday 20th July, the uncompromising 10 mile course directly up and down Snowdon by the Llanberis Path, is considered one of the finest races in the world of mountain running.
The main event starts at 1.00 p.m. but there will be plenty going-on all day (timetable
) in the Parc Padarn start/finish fields. Once again the race will be televised for S4C.
New for this year is an uphill only race to the summit, the Snowdon Super Cup
. Starting at 11.00 a.m. it will be limited to just 50 invited elite athletes.
Race Co-ordinator, Matt Ward, said: "This year it will be a 'demonstration' race to ensure that the concept works from a logistical point of view. Also, high-quality uphill only races are not as prevalent in the UK as they are in Europe, so we feel that the runners will welcome this announcement of a new race, as we aim to create an event that will have the appeal of the big European races over the coming years."Junior races
, open to anyone, with 10's, U12, U14, U16, U18 categories start at 2.10 p.m. but registration will be required beforehand. On race day morning there is also a run for 4 - 8 yr-olds around the field. Organised by Heidi Petch-Jones from the Gallt y Glyn Hotel, it is aimed at encouraging youngsters to get involved with the sport.
Overseen by a committee of local volunteers the Snowdon Race has the community at its heart. Heading up the team, Stephen Edwards, said: "Llanberis is very proud to host this race and everyone in the village takes a pride in welcoming all the visitors it attracts."
This special race is on the must-do list of thousands of mountain runners but with the entry number limited, only around 600 runners get the chance to take part year-on-year.Photo:
